About Us

Barton Road Centre is currently owned by Lancashire County Council. However the running of the centre is overseen by a management committee, made up of members of the community and elected representatives. This arrangement had been in place since the opening of the Centre as a Youth and Community Centre in 1988. By 2008 however, the County Council had withdrawn funding for community provision and so the Management Committee was left to manage community provision in a much more independent way.

In 2012, we appointed a Community Co-ordinator to oversee community work at the Centre. Denise Nardone remains in post and is the first point of contact for many people who use the Centre.

At the moment, Barton Road Centre receives support from the County Council through reduced rental rates. However, as you may have read, Barton Road Centre has been confirmed as one of the building declared surplus to requirements by the County Council. The Management Committee has applied for an asset management transfer and this should have been confirmed in September 2016.

Barton Road Centre has now become a charity (Charity Number 1182276).

The Centre relies on volunteers and income from rentals to keep it afloat. In a regular week, we welcome in excess of 600 children and adults into the building. It is an invaluable resource to South Lancaster. Come and have a look!
